Construction will start on walkways leading to the EDSA Busway from three of SM's biggest malls on EDSA, the Department of Transportation said Wednesday, as it broke ground on the project.

Each concourse will have ticketing booths, tap-to-pay turnstiles and concierge counters, the DOTr said. At present, commuters get to the EDSA busway (located in the middle of the highway), through elevated walkways that are built around MRT stations.

The first concierge will be built to connect SM North EDSA to the busway, then SM Megamall, ending at SM Mall of Asia. That's EDSA north to south with one concierge in between.

"Mas magiging ligtas na ang pag akyat-baba ng mga pasahero sa mga sakayan," DOTr Sec. Arthur Tugade said.

Commuters can use the EDSA Busway concourses by first quarter of 2022 after 10 months of construction, SM Group said.

The EDSA Busway, transferred from the outermost to the innermost lanes, was earlier criticized by Sen. Nancy Binay for being a “an ill-timed and hastily crafted virtual experiment, which placed public safety as a secondary concern.”
