Commuters can ride the MRT-3 for free for over a month starting Monday, March 28 until April 30 to help the public ease the burden of rising fuel prices and return to onsite work.

Around 300,000 to 400,000 passengers are expected to ride the MRT-3 following its massive rehabilitation, its management said. Currently, the train ferries about 280,000 passengers daily with social distancing measures in place, according to Transportation Sec. Arthur Tugade.

President Rodrigo Duterte announced the free rides at MRT-3 during the inauguration of the rehabilitated train system last week.

How many trains will run during the free ride period?

To augment passenger capacity during the free ride, MRT-3 will launch on Monday two new train sets that will run during the peak hours of 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The new train sets can accommodate 1,576 passengers each and will be deployed on top of the existing 18 3-car train sets.
