Manila Mayor Isko Moreno is set to play the part of Filipino revolutionary leader Andres Bonifacio in a new movie, producer Regal Films said over the weekend.

Moreno will star in the movie titled "MayPagasa," which will be directed by Erik Matti.

Regal Films said in casting the Manila mayor, it saw "values and morals of Isko Moreno similar to Andres Bonifacio."

"It is Moreno's passion, nationalism, and love for the country that made him suitable to play the role," it said in an Independence Day announcement.

“We want to be able to tell a story about Bonifacio that hasn’t been taught in schools and has never been seen in the many Bonifacio movies made in the past. And we want to make this particular Bonifacio movie relevant to the year 2021,” said Dondon Monteverde, producer of the movie.

Moreno takes on the filmmaking project ahead of the 2022 national elections, where he said he would run although he has yet to disclose for which post.
