The low pressure area east of the Bicol peninsula intensified into a tropical depression Thursday afternoon and was given the name Maring, PAGASA said.
The 13th storm of the year was spotted at 505 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and 55 kph gusts at 4 p.m., the weather bureau said.
Maring's trough or extension will bring rains over Eastern Visayas as it moves southeastward, PAGASA said.
It is forecast to move northward by Friday, which could result in the raising of tropical cyclone wind signals over several areas in northern Luzon by Saturday. It could make landfall in Babuyan Islands by Monday, said PAGASA.
