Senatorial candidate Luke Espiritu said Thursday he clapped back against rivals Harry Roque and Larry Gadon during the SMNI debates because he couldn't allow disinformation on the Marcos years.

Labor leader Espiritu told ANC he was "duly-bound to refute" falsehoods. Twitter branded him the "bardagulan king" after his retorts to Roque and Gadon, both supporters of presidential candidate Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.

"If we influence our voters with fraudulent claims, ano ang mangyayari sa atin? Dapat expect nila na kapag may claims sila na ganun, expect nila na meron magko-contest noon and I was there, and of course hindi ako naniniwala doon, siyempre iko-contest natin 'yun," said Espiritu, one of three senatorial candidates under presidential candidate Leody de Guzman's slate.

"It's not because of me. It's because of the fact na everyone else felt the same na galit na sa historical revisionism, siguro hindi lang nila ma-express sa ganung klaseng kalawak na platform at dahil in-express ko sa ganung kalawak na platform kaya natuwa ang mga tao."

Espiritu called out Roque for backing Marcos Jr. when before he entered government, he was a known anti-Marcos.

"Using human rights in order for you to get to where you are, medyo problema 'yun. Medyo malalagay ka talaga nun sa pagkuwestiyon o scrutiny lalo na tumakbo ka. Human rights lawyer ka before, anti-Marcos ka before? Ngayon apologist ka ni Marcos, ano'ng nangyari?"

Espiritu was also praised for verbally sparring with suspended lawyer Gadon, who asked the candidates not to use the debates to sow "propaganda" against the Marcoses.

"We have to confront it with the truth. Ang problem lang natin, ang forces of revisionism ay maraming mga pera at their disposal. Billions and billions at their disposal. Tayo, wala naman tayong ganoong billions sa disposal natin but it does not excuse us from always doing our obligation," said Espiritu.

"When I went to that debate, that’s part of my obligation na kapag may nakikita tayong ganitong kasinungalingan, hindi pupuwede na palalampasin natin ’yan. Kasinungalingan ’yan eh. Talagang hindi maaatim ’yan ng isang prinsipyadong tao."

For Espiritu, the exchanges with the two senatorial bets defending the Marcoses were "bitin", stressing the need to discuss further why the only son and namesake of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. is running for president.

"Di ko naman kailangan atakehin si Marcos. Puwede ako kumuha ng boto sa mga Bongbong, puwede ako kumuha ng boto sa mga Leni. Huwag ako magsalita against Bongbong, huwag ako magsalita against Leni basta chill lang ako. Magsasalita lang ako tungkol sa kung ano-anong bagay-bagay bobotohin ako ng dalawang kampo. 'Yan ay kung trapo ka pero hindi talaga maaatim ng aking konsensya na itong mga kalokohan na fake news na ito ay namamayagpag tapos hindi mo kokontrahin?"

"Kailangan we do it. Lahat tayo. We can only combat this false news through the truth. A principled defense of the truth."
