Philippines Logs 13,177 Cases, Second Highest Daily Jump Ever

The Philippines on Friday recorded 13,177 new COVID-19 cases, the second highest daily tally since the pandemic began in March 2020, the Department of Health said.

The highest single-day jump of 15,310 was recorded last April 2, when the capital region was also under lockdown or ECQ. As of Friday, there were 96,395 active cases.

There were 4,332 recoveries and 299 deaths reported, bringing total to 1,587,069 recoveries and 29,838 deaths. Since the start of the pnademic, the Philippines recorded 1,713,302 total infections.

Metro Manila and other high risk areas are under lockdown until Aug. 20 in an attempt to slow the spread of the super-contagious Delta variant while local government units ramp up vaccination efforts after the arrival of shipments.

The country has so far vaccinated 10 million people, with the goal of inoculation at least 50 million of the population before 2021 ends.
