Pope Francis has voiced his support for same-sex civil unions in a documentary film, his strongest statement yet for LGBT rights, according to The New York Times and the Associated Press.

Francis' remarks were quoted from the film "Francesco," which premiered recently.

“Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God,” said the Pontiff. “What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered.”
