Ramon Ang Budgets P1 Billion for Pasig River Clean-up

San Miguel Corp said Wednesday it was committing  P1 billion to its Pasig River clean-up efforts which is slated to start before the end of May, the most recent attempt at revitalizing the waterway which has long symbolized urban pollution.

The clean-up is in partnership with the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources and aims to remove 50,000 metric tons of waste every month, totalling 600,000 metric tons annually, with equipment procured last April.

“We are taking decisive action to clean up our major river systems to balance the needs of our economy and the environment towards a viable and sustainable path forward, “ SMC president Ramon Ang said.

In 2020, the company spent P1 billion to clean up the 27-kilometer Tullahan-Tinajeros River system which encompasses heavily flooded areas in Quezon City, Malabon, and Navotas.

“Like traffic, congestion, and smog, pollution of our bodies of water is one of the many issues that have made life difficult and less than ideal for all of us these past couple of decades. While many of us may not immediately notice it, we are paying a big price for these compounding problems. Our advocacy is to take action and undo some of the damage and rescue and rehabilitate our rivers,” Ang said.

The attempt to clean the river runs parallel to the effort to decongest Metro Manila traffic with the upcoming Pasig River Expressway, which is to be built on the river’s banks.
