Sen. Risa Hontiveros on Thursday said she was running again as senator in the 2022 elections.
Hontiveros confirmed her plans for next year's polls as she grieved the passing of former President Benigno Aquino III, whom she said was instrumental to her being a public servant.
"Only because you asked me the question, ang yes ko ay sa unang tanong," Hontiveros told reporters in a virtual interview when asked if she was seeking reelection next year.
"But there will be time to share more about that with you kasi nga may iniintay tayong anunsyo ng isang kapwa pamilya natin," she added.
Hontiveros is on her first term as senator. In 2010, she ran as senator under the Liberal Party ticket led by Aquino. She was also a part of the Team PNoy senatorial slate in the 2013 elections before finally winning a seat in 2016 still under the LP-led Koalisyon ng Daang Matuwid.
Hontiveros is still unsure how Aquino's death would impact the opposition's electoral run in 2022, but she hoped Filipinos would "make the most" of the former president's life and legacy as a public service.
"Let's make the most of it, do our best, para iyan ay maglikha ng the most public good na pwede para sa ating mga mamamayan lalo na ngayong panahon ng pandemya at resesyon," she said.
"I'm sure even PNoy has many ideas about how to recover from this terrible health and economic crisis, tulad noong araw-araw niyang iniisip noong siya ay presidente pa natin," she added.
Apart from Hontiveros, Liberal Party president Francis Pangilinan earlier announced that he was also planning to run for senator next year.
The party is also supporting the possible presidential run of their chairperson, Vice President Leni Robredo.
