San Miguel Corp said Wednesday it would build a solar farm to power its mega airport in Bulacan as part of efforts to transition to clean energy sources.

The 200-milliwatt farm will be constructed on a 2,500-hectare property. It will supply electricity to the P740-billion New Manila International Airport.

According to San Miguel President and COO Ramon S. Ang, the solar farm in Bulacan will be equipped with a battery energy storage facility that enables power storage when generation is high and consumption is low. Reserves may be released when demand is high.

“This battery storage will be a viable solution to balancing electricity loads and storing unstable energy supply coming from the sun and other renewable sources of energy which we are looking to utilize for the airport ,” Ang said.

The green battery technology is projected to encourage the use of renewable energy in the long term.
