Vice presidential candidate Sara Duterte-Carpio has been adopted by her father's PDP Laban, widening the alliance that supports her bid for a national position after serving as Davao City mayor, a party official said Friday.
The bloc led by President Rodrigo Duterte's energy secretary, Alfonso Cusi, said it was "now finalizing the terms" of an alliance with former president Gloria Arroyo's Lakas-CMD, under whose banner the younger Duterte filed her candidacy.
The PDP-Laban statement had no mention of Sara's running mate, the late dictator's son Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., whom Lakas-CMD earlier endorsed as presidential candidate.
"The PDP Laban believes that the quality of her leadership and her track record in the performance of her duties in her current office make her most qualified for the position she is now aspiring for and therefore deserves the party’s support," it said.
Having the younger Duterte as an adopted PDP-Laban member "will help ensure the continuity of the vital programs of the current administration", preserving its legacy, the party said.
"We call on all our partymates to hold their ground, stand firm on the principles and ideals of the party, and toe the party line. We are now on our way to launching our campaign for Mayor Sara, and we assure all PDP Laban candidates that the party is committed to support all of your candicacy," the PDP-Laban faction said.
