What Sara Duterte Thinks of Becoming DepEd Chief

Presumptive vice president Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday quashed talk of division between her and running mate presumptive president Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. after the latter said she would lead the education department instead of her preferred defense portfolio.

Marcos Jr. on Wednesday night said Duterte-Carpio agreed to helm the Department of Education, noting that she is a mother "who wants to make sure that her children are well-trained and well-educated."

The incoming president made the announcement hours after Duterte-Carpio's spokesperson said in an interview that she had "indicated" interest in leading the Department of National Defense.

"Before the campaign, we talked about the Department of National Defense. But seeing the way things are at the moment, I expect that people who want to see the new administration to fail will fabricate intrigues about my loyalty and the DND position to break the UniTeam. The Uniteam wants a stable Philippines and the most harmonious administration possible," Duterte-Carpio said.

Duterte-Carpio also said the discussion about her leading DepEd happened on Wednesday too.

"Yesterday, the presumptive President and I once again talked about how I could help the country. It was decided that I would work on producing skilled learners with the mindset to realize their full potential as individuals," Duterte-Carpio said. 

Thanking  Marcos Jr. for the confidence in her abilities to lead DepEd, Duterte-Carpio said the country needs "a future generation of patriotic Filipinos that advocate peace and discipline in their respective communities."

The DepEd was led by Leonor Briones, who has a wide experience in the academe, under the administration of Duterte-Carpio's father, incumbent Rodrigo Duterte.
