The tweet announcing the death of Chadwick Boseman, star of the groundbreaking superhero movie "Black Panther," topped Twitter for 2020, capturing the essence of loss humanity experienced during this challenging year.
Boseman, who died from colon cancer in August, was the first black superhero to get his own standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"The world mourned the death of actor Chadwick Boseman, making the Tweet announcing his tragic passing the most Retweeted of the year and the most Liked of all time," Twitter said in a blog post.
The second most-liked tweet for 2020 is also about loss.
Former U.S. President Barack Obama's tribute to basketball icon Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in January, followed the tweet on Boseman.
It comes as no surprise however that the top hashtag used by netizens this year was #COVID19 as the world faced an unprecedented global health crisis.
"Not only was the hashtag (and other variations on it) Tweeted nearly 400 million times, but we also saw the ways in which it changed how we Tweeted about so many other topics," Twitter said, noting that #StayHome was the third most used hashtag.
