Thousands fled their flooded homes in the Caraga region as Tropical Depression Auring (Dujuan) crawled towards the southeastern Philippines on Monday.

Slow-moving Auring inundated large parts of Eastern Mindanao over the weekend as the Amihan or cold winds blowing from the northeast weakened its winds before impact, estimated later on Monday.

Rescue boats from the Coast Guard navigated flooded streets while Army troops carried the elderly out of their houses in Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur. The coastal city of Tandag suffered "massive" flooding, said Surigao del Sur Gov. Ayec Pimentel.

Some 50,000 people were evacuated in Caraga over the weekend while relief supplies were prepositioned, said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The Amihan and mountainous terrain on impact in the Dinagat Islands and Eastern Samar area will further weaken Auring, which could dissipate into a low pressure area in 24 hours. However, the threat of rains remains, PAGASA said.
