Presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos said he was willing to work with anyone, including those in the opposition, should he win the May 9 elections for the sake of unity.
The son and namesake of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was asked by veteran broadcaster Korina Sanchez-Roxas if he would work with "former 'yellow' people", the pejorative term for the opposition, if he becomes president. He said he would choose those with good records regardless of political color.
"Are they smart? Are they good? Are they hardworking? Are they willing to help? Sure," he said during the "Upuan ng Katotohanan" interviews.
"'Pag sinasabi mo hindi kayo puwede, us or them na naman ito. Dito, kami-kami lang, don sila, 'di sila puwede. Ano 'yun? Walang mangyayari sa atin," the 64-year-old said.
Unity is the theme behind the campaign of Marcos Jr. and his running mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, launching a "UniTeam" coalition backed by former presidents Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Fidel Ramos, and Joseph Estrada.
He said he would be conscious on who to trust if he becomes president, citing his father's "worst mistake" of trusting the wrong people during his rule, without mentioning names.
Marcos Jr. revealed on Instagram that he attended the sit-down interview with Sanchez-Roxas on the same day as the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas presidential forum, which he skipped due to conflict in schedule.
Marcos Jr., survey frontrunner, seeks to revive the family name in capturing the presidency 36 years after his father was ousted in the 1986 People Power Revolution.
Since then, he served as a governor and congressman of Ilocos Norte, the family's bailiwick, before winning a senatorial seat in 2010. In 2016, he lost the vice presidency to opposition candidate and human rights lawyer Leni Robredo, the sole woman candidate for the 2022 presidential elections.
