Presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos said Monday his running mate Sara Duterte wants to head the Department of Defense should they win in the May 9 elections.

The only son and namesake of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. said he was surprised to learn that the Davao City mayor wanted to serve in his Cabinet as defense secretary.

"It seems that it's going to be a good idea dahil nga tama rin yung kanyang sinasabi...Ika niya 'Yung mga problems of security, problems of terrorism eh kami sa Davao biktima kami lahat niyan at marami na kaming programang nakatulong'," Marcos Jr. told One PH.

Describing Duterte as a "very intelligent person," Marcos Jr. expressed confidence that her ideas "would be of value."

"I'm sure marami siyang mga bagong ideas na naiba dun sa mga dati at dapat natin tingnan," he added.

Duterte earlier said she would push for mandatory military service for all Filipinos aged 18 and above if she wins the vice presidency.
