(UPDATE) Light-flyweight boxer Carlo Paalam advanced to the finals at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday, assured of at least a silver medal in the Philippines' best performance so far at the Summer Games.
Paalam, 23, beat Japan's Ryomei Tanaka 5-0 at the Kokugikan Arena. He will face Britain's Galal Yafai on Aug. 7, 1 p.m.
Compatriots Hidilyn Diaz and Nesthy Petecio won gold and silver and weightlifting and boxing, respectively. Boxer Eumir Marcial, assured of a bronze, will fight for sport in the finals later in the day.
