Carlos Yulo of the Philippines bagged a gold medal by ruling the vault final of the 50th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan.
Yulo scored 14.800 and 15.033 for an average of 14.916 as the first gymnast out and his score stood against the next seven entries, enabling the Filipino star to win the second world title of his career, but in a different apparatus.
Manila-born Yulo atoned for his fifth-place finish on Saturday in his pet floor exercise, the apparatus where he won the world title in 2018, with an impressive showing in the vault, the same event where he finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.
After his stint in Tokyo ended in heartbreak, Yulo promised redemption in Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.
"Hanggang 2028 po ako maglalaro, decided na po 'yan. Sa Paris po, babawi po talaga ako doon," he told ABS-CBN News.
"Next time po iga-grab ko na talaga. Ayoko na lang na basta sumali ako, na-feel ko po na kaya ko rin maging katulad ng mga nakatayo doon po sa top," he said.
The Tokyo Olympics saw the Philippines' biggest medal haul since it participated in the Games in 1924, with weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz bagging the country's first gold.
