The Commission on Elections said Sunday it was in favor of the distribution of voter registration forms at community pantries to help encourage Filipinos to sign up for the 2022 polls.
In response to a question during a Vote Pilipinas forum, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said there was no problem with distributing voter registration forms at community pantries.
The commission has teamed up with the non-partisan Vote Pilipinas to get more Filipinos to register and vote for the next polls.
"Pwede yan. Wala namang problema diyan. In fact, some people have already approached us to ask about that. Pwede yan, you can do that," Jimenez said.
Jimenez said that Comelec personnel handed out voter registration forms to community pantry patrons in Quezon City at one time.
"Kami mismo namimigay kami nung voter registration forms. So yeah, you can do it in the pantry. That will help a lot, trust me," he added.
Inspired by a corner stall in Maginhawa Street, Quezon City, community pantries have sprouted in many areas of the country, providing food and other essential items to pandemic-hit individuals for free.
The Comelec said it is aiming to register seven million new and deactivated voters in time for the 2022 elections. The voting registration period ends on Sept. 30, 2021.
