(UPDATE) The Commission on Elections on Wednesday extended the voter registration period for the 2022 elections to accommodate those who have yet to sign up.

After Sept. 30, the Comelec will again open registration from Oct. 11 to 30, a decision unanimously approved by the Commission en banc during its meeting earlier in the day, said Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez.

This is to give way to the filing of certificates of candidacy for national positions from Oct. 1 to 8.

The extended registration period will run Mondays to Fridays only, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for Oct. 30, the last day for signups, which is a Saturday, Jimenez said. Mall registrations will also continue.

Registration for overseas voters is also extended for two weeks, from Oct. 1 to 14, which will not be affected by the filing of certificates of candidacies, he added.

Comelec chairman Sheriff Abas said the poll body was heeding public clamor to extend the registration in deference to pandemic restrictions.

"On the part of the Comelec, no one, walang ni isang direktor na nagsabi na they will be in favor of the extension pero 'yun nga, binalanse na namin uli," Abas told CNN Philippines.

Jimenez told the public to bring a filled-out registration form, valid ID, and photocopy of a valid ID to the registration centers to speed up the process. Visit the iRehistro website for more information.
