The Philippines on Wednesday logged 32,246 new COVID-19 cases as authorities imposed a "no vaccine, no ride" policy in public transportation to curb a surge in infections driven by the Omicron variant.
The day's tally brought active cases to 208,164. the Department of Health also tallied 5,063 new recoveries and 144 deaths.
Overall, a total of 3,058,634 COVID-19 cases have been reported since the pandemic began in March 2020, of which 2,797,816 have recovered and 52,654 died.
Alert Level 3 in Metro Manila, Bulacan, and several provinces and cities is expected to last until Jan. 15. The Department of Transportation earlier implemented a 'no vaccination, no entry' policy running parallel to random antigen tests in MRT and LRT-2 stations.
The Commission on Higher Education said limited face-to-face classes in the college level should start on Jan. 31 in Alert Level 3 areas even as cases surge.
