The Philippines on Sunday logged 1,038 new COVID-19 cases as Metro Manila is downgraded to Alert Level 1 starting March 1.

The day's tally brought active cases to 52,961, with a total of 1,999 new recoveries and 51 new deaths reported.

Overall, a total of 3,661,049 COVID-19 cases have been reported since the pandemic began in March 2020, of which 3,551,687 have recovered and 56,401 died.

Alert Level 1 is the lowest set of restrictions under the five-tier alert-based COVID quarantines.

The Department of Health likened Alert Level 1 to the “new normal", where minimum health standards will still be observed but the capacity limits in business establishments and public transportation will be removed.
