The Philippines on Tuesday reported over 4,000 new COVID-19 cases, underscoring a surge that, according to Health Secretary Francisco Duque, could lead to a new record if left unchecked.

The 4,437 new COVID-19 cases brought the total active infections to 57,736. Eleven new deaths were reported along with 166 new recoveries. Since the start of the pandemic, the Philippines has tallied a total of 631,320 COVID-19 cases.

The total death toll stood at 12,848 while total recoveries were at 560,736.

The lower case tally came a day after Metro Manila implemented its region-wide curfew to limit movement, that has been blamed in part for the surge.

Duque reported to President Rodrigo Duterte late on Monday that the surge in COVID cases could surpass the 2020 peak unless infections are capped. The Philippines reported its highest single-day increase, 6,958 cases, on Aug. 10, 2020.
