For the first time since the pandemic started, the Philippines reported over 8,000 new COVID-19 cases in a single day, the Department of Health said Monday, as the resurgent virus continued to spread.

The DOH tallied 8,019 new COVID-19 infections, a new all-time high. This brought the total number of active cases to 80,970. The country has a cumulative case count of 671,792, the DOH said.

There were four new deaths reported on Monday, bringing the total death toll to 12,972. There were 103 new recoveries, bringing the total to 577,850.

The new record-high infections were reported on the same day the government placed the Greater Manila area under a GCQ bubble to arrest the surge.

Prior to Monday's numbers, the DOH has been reporting over 7,000 new COVID-19 cases per day. The country is also guarding against the spread of new virus variants.
