Face-to-Face Graduations Banned Again This Year: DepEd

Face-to-face graduation ceremonies are prohibited this 2021, the Department of Education said Monday as it set the schedule for moving up ceremonies in public schools in the Philippines.

Education Sec. Leonor Briones, in a May 24 memorandum, said graduation and end-of-school-year ceremonies for kindergarten, grades 6, 10, and 12 could be held from July 12 to 16, 2021. The school year 2020-2021 is set to end on July 10.

"To ensure the protection of the health and safety of learners, teachers, and personnel, as well as parents and other stakeholders, any face-to-face ceremony is not allowed," Briones said.

Private schools are allowed to set their own schedule for graduation and moving up ceremonies depending on their respective school calendars.

Virtual ceremonies are an option for ceremonies that will run for less than two hours, Briones said, citing the need to consider internet connectivity.

Schools can also broadcast graduation and moving up ceremonies on social media but must secure the consent of parents and learners prior to broadcast.

The theme for the 2021 graduation is “Strengthening the Quality of Education Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic.”

The Philippines in 2020 adopted for the first time blended learning for its education system as the COVID-19 pandemic restricted schools from conducting traditional face-to-face classes.
