Lovers are advised to practice safe sex on Valentine's Day, the Department of Health said Friday as sought to address both COVID-19 and HIV with the campaign #AwraSafely
"Awra" is a Filipino gay slang which roughly translates to finding a mate or the very least, a fling. With the campaign, the DOH hopes to raise awareness on the virus that causes AIDS.
"Maliban sa COVID-19, nariyan pa rin po ang ibang sakit na maaari nating makuha kagaya ng HIV," said Health Usec. Maria Rosario Vergeire.
Here are some tips from the DOH:
- Set your boundaries and practice safe sex with trusted partners only
- Take it slow.
"Maaaring umpisahan sa pagpapadala ng message at tingnan muna roon kung ano ang maaaring mangyari," said Vergeire. - Install apps with end-to-end encryption to ensure your privacy
- Know your partner's sexual pleasure.
- Protect your identity.

The DOH said that while HIV has no cure, it can be prevented by practicing safe and protected sex. This means sticking to one partner and knowing your partner's status at all times.
It also reminded individuals exposed to HIV to consult a doctor or health authority. Sexually active individuals regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation are also urged to get regularly tested for HIV, at least every three months.
