Duterte Wishes for Clean Elections on 77th Birthday, His Last as President

The president will celebrate his birthday in Davao.

President Rodrigo Duterte is wishing for a "clean, fair, and honest" elections on May 9, on the eve of his last birthday as president, Malacañang said Sunday.

Duterte will mark his 77th birthday on Monday with a "simple and quiet celebration" in Davao City, in line with his family's tradition, Communications Sec. Martin Andanar said in a statement.

"His birthday wish for this year is to have a clean, fair, and honest election in May 2022, as he has time and again underscored the importance of a peaceful transfer of power as part of his enduring legacy," Andanar said.

"Our prayer for the Almighty is to continue giving the President good physical and mental health in the years to come so he may carry on serving the interest of and bringing betterment to the lives of Filipinos," he added.

Duterte has yet to endorse any candidate to succeed him after his term ends on June 30, although his political party, PDP-Laban, has chosen to support Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.

Duterte's daughter and political heir Sara Duterte-Carpio is running for vice president along with Marcos Jr. under the "UniTeam" tandem. Both Marcos Jr. and Duterte-Carpio are leading pre-election surveys.
