Vehicle inspections to be conducted at private centers are no longer mandatory upon the orders of President Rodrigo Duterte, his spokesperson announced Thursday.
This means that there should be no additional fees to be paid for the registration of vehicles with the Land Transportation Office, Duterte's spokesperson Harry Roque said.
"Ibig sabihin kinakailangan walang bagong singil, walang karagdagang singil para sa pagpaparehistro ng mga sasakyan," Roque said during a Palace press briefing.
Duterte's decision, according to Roque, was meant to balance government policy with the financial constraints brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic to Filipinos.
Senators earlier recommended the suspension of the policy since there are "a lot of discrepancies" concerning its implementation.

Under the rule pushed by the Department of Transportation, motorists need to have their vehicles checked by a government-accredited private motor vehicle inspection center or PMVIC so they could register these with the LTO.
Previously, motor vehicle inspection was done by the LTO but their equipment had become obsolete.
The policy drew flak due to the fees that were supposed to be paid for, which are more than triple the amount that the LTO used to charge.
