COVID-Proof? Survey Says 9 in 10 Approve of Duterte, Have Trust in Him

Duterte keeps high scores during the pandemic.

(UPDATE) President Rodrigo Duerte enjoys the approval and big trust of nine in 10 Filipinos, according to a Pulse Asia poll in September, illustrating the strength of his support base during the coronavirus pandemic.

The survey period, Sept. 14 to 20, was around the same time Metro Manila and its suburbs were placed under the second lowest quarantine, GCQ. At around the same time, new coronavirus cases had begun to slow after peaking in August.

Asked if they approved of the President's performance, Duterte scored a 91% approval rating. The rest were equally dvided between those who disapproved and the undecided, Pulse Asia said in a statement.

Asked if they trust the president, 91% said said they did, 6% were undecided while 3% had little or no trust.

Vice President Leni Robredo had a 57% approval rating, 21% were undecided while 22% disapproved. Robredo also had a 50% trust rating, 28% were undecided while 22% had little or no trust.

Duterte's approval rating was up four points from 87% in December 2019, Pulse Asia said. It did not dip below 88% across regions or across income brackets, the pollster said.

The President had 88% approval in Metro Manila, 88% in Luzon, 92% in the Visayas and 97% in Mindanao. Across income brackets, he had 88% approval in Class ABC, 90% in Class D and 95% in Class E.

Duterte's trust ratings did not fall below 81% regardless of region or income bracket. He had 90% trust in Metro Manila, 89% in Luzon, 94% in the Visayas and 95% in Mindanao. He had 81% trust in Class ABC, 92% in Class D and 96% in Class E.
