President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday expressed openness to running for vice president once he steps down from power in 2022, saying it's "not at all a bad idea."
The 76-year-old leader said he might run for the second-highest post in the land "if there is space."
“It’s not at all a bad idea, and if there is space for me there siguro pero kung wala akong space, everybody is crowding up, wanting to be one, vice president, sila na lang muna kasi tapos na ko," Duterte said.
"But there are things that I’d like to continue and that would be dependent on the president that I would support," he said.
Some members of Duterte's party, PDP-Laban, has been urging him to run for vice president next year. The chief executive however had earlier said that he would skip a vice presidential bid should House Majority Leader Ferdinand Martin Romualdez seek the post following a promise he made to the lawmaker.
Romualdez is a nephew of former first lady Imelda Marcos, whose family supports Duterte.
