First, it was expressways. This time, public utility buses are going cashless. Starting Oct. 1, the Department of Transportation will fully automate fare collection at the EDSA Busway using tap-and-go Beep Cards.

The Beep Card system, which is also used in the MRT and LRT, takes away the hassle of falling in line, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board said.

“We want to ensure that commuters along EDSA will have a safer and comfortable travel, while at the same time providing them a more seamless and efficient system of public transport,” said DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Steve Pastor, who added that cash-handling in such settings is linked to virus transmission.
