Former Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said Friday he was considering running for president, saying those who want to run for the post should declare their intentions as early as August.
The Taguig-Pateros congressman, who was President Rodrigo Duterte's running mate in 2016, said he was "praying and discerning" about running for president.
"I'm seriously considering running for president or for other positions but I'm really praying and discerning about it," he said.
Cayetano said those who are conidering running for president should make up their minds since the presidency is a "serious" job.
"Seryosong usapan ang presidency...Napakaraming challenges problema so sana yung usual gimmicks, usual pabebe, usual tanggi or pakipot politics isantabi natin yan kasi we really have to know yung character ng kandidato, yung vision ng kandidato, yung track record anong ipapangako niya sa tao," he said.
Cayetano took over leadership of the House of Representatives in 2019 following a term-sharing agreement with Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco. He resigned as speaker in 2020, paving the way for Velasco's ascent to the post.
