Facebook Can and Should Shut Down Troll Farms, Says Sotto

Spawned by election season, they're out to discredit politicians.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Monday urged Facebook to shut down troll farms which are supposedly out to discredit possible candidates in the 2022 elections.

Sotto, who is considering running for vice president next year, said the world's largest social network should clamp down on trolls "until after the elections."

"Nasa Facebook yan. Kaya nila yun. Makikita naman nila e. I have talked to one of the officers of Facebook in the Philippines, sabi nga nila, kaya nilang gawin yun e," Sotto told reporters in a virtual interview.

"Kung walang ginawa kung hindi manira, aba’y siguro shut it down until after the elections. After the elections, maglaro sila kung gusto nila," he added.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson earlier alleged that an undersecretary was organizing troll farms to attack government critics and potential candidates in the 2022 polls not aligned with the administration.

Sotto raised the alarm over this claim, saying that troll farms would only taint the country's politics.

"Hindi bale sana kung totoo yung sasabihin ng mga yun e siguradong hindi e, dahil kung totoo, e di kasuhan ninyo yung mga taong may ginagawang masama," he said.

Despite this, Sotto hoped that the voters could "sift through the rubble" and discern truth from mere criticism.
