Former President Fidel Ramos, who restored stability after the tumultuous years after the first People Power uprising, has died at 94, state-run PTV and multiple news outlets reported Sunday.
More popularly known by his initials, FVR, Ramos took over from former President Corazon Aquino in 1992 and until the end of his term in 1998, primed the Philippines as one of Southeast Asia's rising economic tigers.
The Philippine Star, The Manila Times and SunStar also reported on Ramos' passing.
Ramos is regarded as a visionary, putting the catchphrase "Philippines 2000" in the national consciousness. However, the Asian financial crisis happened in 1997 and the Philippines would not regain footing until years later.
As head of the Philippine Cosntabulary, the precursor of the Philippine National Police, Ramos' defection from the Marcos dictatorship in 1986 turned the tide of People Power in favor of Cory Aquino.
