Purported images of Samsung's Galaxy S22 Ultra due out in early 2022 have leaked over the weekend and provided insights on the Korean electronics giant's new strategy for handsets.

The S22 Ultra, according to the leaked image from Frong Page Tech, will have a boxy design like the Galaxy Note and an S-Pen stylus that can be stashed inside the device, also like a Galaxy Note.

Save for the S branding, the S22 Ultra is in essence the successor to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra from 2022.

Samsung skipped the sequel to the Note line in 2021 (which would have been the Note 21) and instead released the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, reflecting its push towards foldable smartphones. The foldables were showcased ahead of the new iPhones, a slot ususally reserved for the Note.

There were some clues in early 2021 that the Note was being merged with the S series. The S21 Ultra had S-Pen support, but the stylus is sold separately and cannot be stored inside the device.

Turns out, the Galaxy Note lives, albeit with a different name.

The Galaxy Note is an important device for Samsung. The original Note released in 2011 single-handedly invented the phablet or phone-tablet hybrid with its 5.3-inch screen (miniscule by 2021 standards).

The note also had a stylus, challenging the late Steve Jobs' declaration that "no one" wants a stylus with their smart devices. Apple would eventually release a Pencil for the iPad, which has yet to come to the iPhone.

The S22 Ultra's camera will sport a 108MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide shooter, a 10MP 3X telephoto cam and a 10MP 10X telephoto, according to Engadget.

It is also expected to ship with One UI 4, Samsung's skinned Android 12 out of the box. Like in every year, Samsung will also claim improvements in screen quality, processing speed and battery life.
