Sen. Richard Gordon on Tuesday said he wanted someone who has experience in public health matters to be his running mate should he run for president in the 2022 elections.
Gordon, who earlier said he was considering vying for the presidency next year, said his vice president running should not simply be a "flower vase."
"I'm looking for a public health person. We have to get out of COVID, and I will need somebody other than my Secretary of Health and the Congress to make sure that somebody is on the ball paano tayo lalabas sa pandemic," he told reporters in an interview.
Gordon, who also serves as chair of the Philippine Red Cross, said his vice president should be able to oversee and recommend measures on how to address the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gordon said he would make his decision about running for president in 2022 by September, noting that his primary consideration was the health of his wife who is immuno-affected.
Should he not vie for presidency, he would either run again for senator or for mayor of Olongapo, the position he held from 1988 to 1993. Retirement is also an option for him.
"I don't think I want to be vice president," he added.
Gordon previously ran for president in the 2010 elections but lost to the late President Benigno Aquino III. He placed sixth overall.
