Habagat Floods Parts of Metro Manila, Marikina River Swells

Floods hit Metro Manila on Saturday following days of monsoon rains, authorities said, as residents near the Marikina River were evacuated.

More rains are expected through the weekend as Typhoon Fabian (In-Fa) stirs the seasonal Habagat or Southwest Monsoon, PAGASA said.

As of mid-morning Saturday, Alert Level 2, the second highest under a three-step, warning system was raised in the Marikina River. This means the water had risen to 16 meters and people are asked to evacuate. At Alert Level 3, the water would have risen to 18 meters and there will be forced evacuation.

Footage aired on ABS-CBN showed a portion of the river overflowing to a nearby park. A couple of cars were also seen floating.

Flooding was also reported in parts of Malabon, Valenzuela, Quezon City, Pasay and in Manila, along Taft Avenue and Espana and Roxas Boulevards, said MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos.
