Incoming Sen. Raffy Tulfo has begun his preparations for his new role as senator, saying that his work as a legislator will serve as a learning experience for him to become a better public servant.

Tulfo, who placed third in the 2022 senatorial elections, attended a legislative briefing in the Senate on Monday while taking courses at the UP National College of Public Administration and Governance.

Apart from learning the ropes of lawmaking, he said he was also taking advice from legal experts on how to properly craft the laws he wants to pass.

"I'm still learning, and very very excited ako doon sa mga natututunan ko and I'm very sure na maa-apply ko yung matutunan ko sa NCPAG sa trabaho ko bilang lingkod bayan," Tulfo told reporters in an ambush interview.

"I'm very much willing to learn. Every day is a learning process for me bilang isang neophyte sa Senado," he added.

While it will be his first time to hold a public office, Tulfo said he was not new to public service, citing his two decades-worth of experience as a broadcaster appearing mostly in public affairs programs.

"Kapag ako magpapasa ng batas, I will make sure na merong aasahan. Hindi ako magpapasa ng batas na wala akong kaalam-alam, at least kahit papaano meron akong konting alam," he said.

"At yung mga kaalaman kong yun, magagamit ko para mabigyang solusyon yung mga problem na nilahad sa akin for so many years now," he added.

Even as he was aware of the issues that ordinary Filipinos face on a daily basis, Tulfo said that it didn't mean that he no longer needs help in lawmaking.

"Dapat we should be humble enough to accept the fact na we don't know everything and we should learn from everybody especially sa mga beteranong mga senador na nauna sa amin," he said, adding that fellow Sen. Loren Legarda offered to be his mentor.

Tulfo is set to handle the Senate committees on energy and on OFWs, and he is planning to address gut issues when it comes to the energy sector as soon as he assumes office.

"Ang tatama sa sikmura ng ating mga kababayan ay yung tinatawag na systems loss, pagtaas ng kuryente, yung palaging brownout. Yun ang mga bagay na unang ia-address natin," he said.

Tulfo will formally begin his term on June 30, along with other senatorial candidates who won in the May 9 elections.
