Wearing a face mask and his bound hand covered in cloth, Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton was released from his detention cell at military headquarters on Sunday and was deported hours later.
Pemberton, who is in his mid-20s, wore a gray shirt that was tucked into black pants. He gazed sharply from behind his face covering, based on photos released by the Bureau of Immigration.
Pemberton served five years in detention for the killing of transgender Filipina Jennifer Laude, whom he admitted to killing in an Olongapo City motel room in October 2014 in a fit of rage. Convicted of homicide and sentenced to at least 12 years, he was released on good conduct and was also granted absolute pardon by President Rodrigo Duterte.
