Jolina, Kiko Aftermath: 17 Killed, Thousands Displaced

Typhoon Jolina (Conson) left at least 17 people dead while Kiko (Chanthu) displaced thousands individuals as the two storms swept parts of the country last week, authorities said Sunday.

At least seven persons are still missing while 24 others were injured, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said. A total of 29,832 persons were also displaced by Jolina, of which 11,212 are staying in 181 evacuation centers, the agency said.

Damaged houses due to Jolina were reported at 8,924, of which 432 were totally damaged. Estimated damage to agriculture was at P628 million, covering over 2,000 hectares of crops and 360 agricultural infrastructure.

While no casualty was reported yet due to Typhoon Kiko, it displaced some 3,657 individuals, the NDRRMC said in a separate bulletin. Damage to houses and agriculture has also yet to be determined as of Sunday.

Jolina reached typhoon category on Monday before it made landfall over Hernani, Eastern Samar, the first of eight times it hit land, before weakening into a tropical storm on Wednesday. It exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday.

Kiko, who threatened Northern Luzon with winds reaching up to 215 kilometers per hour, also left PAR on Sunday afternoon.
