Malacanang said it declared Friday, July 31, a regular holiday to mark Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of the Sacrifice in Islam.
Unlike other regular holidays, the dates for Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr are moving dates determined by the Muslim lunar calendar, hence the need for the government to announce the holiday dates. Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea announced on Thursday the July 31 holiday.
The Ed al-Adha marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Islam's holiest site. It falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and last month of the Muslim lunar calendar.
Before the long weekend however, President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to address the nation on "major changes" to existing COVID-19 quarantines that will expire on Friday.
