Hundreds of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla fans over the weekend said they would boycott the two ABS-CBN talents should they fail to make a stand against Padilla's mother, Karla Estrada, who last week became third nominee of a party-list that voted to reject the renewal of their home network's franchise.

In an open letter retweeted over 4,000 times, the well-followed Twitter fan account MMXI KathNiel asked Bernardo and Padilla to "take themselves out" of Estrada's decision to represent Tingog Party-list, whose current representative, Yedda Romualdez, voted to reject the renewal of ABS-CBN's franchise.

Hashtag #WithdrawKarlaEstrada trended last week after the ABS-CBN host led the party-list's filing of its certificate of candidacy.

"We are calling out Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla to take themselves out of this, to take a stand and never allow their names to be involved in someone's political gains that they don't support and [are] against their beliefs," the group's statement read, saying that if the two's pronouncements from last year were the basis, their personal political views "obviously" don't match Estrada's.

The group said it doesn't agree that Padilla's mother should run on the basis that she could get the Tacloban-based party-list to change its mind about ABS-CBN's franchise, which was communicated last week by her other son JC Padilla. The network approved of their mother's decision to run, said JC.

"We think differently. If you [really] fight for the right, you will never team up with people who once practiced oppression," it said, noting they also wanted answers as to how some "staff" had asked some Instagram fanpages to repost Estrada's campaign teasers without knowing what it was for.

"Feeling nila nagamit sila [for] political gains. And until now, walang statement and apology yung staff regarding that," MMXIkathniel told reportr.

Why this matters

Until the two respond to their calls, the group said it was willing to withdraw its nine-year-old support of KathNiel, reminding the couple to follow through on their promise to "stand for the freedom of the press, for those who lost their jobs, and those who are abused by the people in power".

"We do this because we do not support and tolerate people that are too different from our principles, even if we stayed together for more than 10 years. Everything is political. And we make choices that involve more than 100 million people," it said.

While the fan group said it might not be speaking for the entire fandom, having generated "mixed" reactions from fellow fans, it said it would stand by its decision.

"Hindi po ganun kadali na alisin yung politics sa suporta. Kasi KathNiel is very vocal on their political stances ever since and 'yun ang natutunan namin sa kanila," it said.

"Being a fan means you support, and that support is extended to their moral and principles. Ngayon, kung mag-iiba po sila ng paniniwala at prinsipyo, hindi na po kami konektado nun. Naiba na po ang stand nila sa paniniwala namin noon," it added.
