Construction for the road extension which will connect Batasan, San Mateo and Katipunan is 60% complete and could be done by the end of the year, public works secretary Mark Villar said on Monday.

"This portion is six lanes. We're at full construction now. We're targetting delivery by the end of the year," Villar said in a video update.

The 5.7-kilometer Katipunan Extension aims to decongest Commonwealth, and could be an alternate route for those coming from Rizal and Marikina. Once complete, it can save motorists up to 30 minutes of travel time, he said.

Though full opening is targetted during the tail-end of 2021, Villar said the DPWH was looking to open some portions or lanes as early as the second quarter.
