Leni Robredo to Receive Honorary Economics Doctorate from Ateneo

For her "remarkable" work as VP.

Former Vice President Leni Robredo will be conferred with a honorary doctorate on economics for her "remarkable" work as vice president, the Ateneo de Manila University said Wednesday.

The Loyola school said it confers honorary degrees to persons who made "notable and invaluable advancements in their field, and have been recognized for them."

"They must be persons of integrity and probity, exemplars of Ateneo ideals, whom the University is honored to include in its roster of alumni," it said.

Robredo's efforts to help alleviate poverty and COVID-19, and her responses to human rights violations and the Philippines' national sovereignty demonstrated the type of leadership that is "strategic and compassionate" which Ateneo hopes its students can emulate, the school said in a statement.

Robredo, a lawyer and economist, will receive the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Economics, honoris causa on Aug. 27 when she delivers her commencement speech to the 2022 graduates, said Ateneo.

Honoris causa, Latin for "for the sake of honor", is a degree conferred by colleges or universities to hold a particular individual in high esteem. It is symbolic in nature, unlike a PhD which is awarded to graduates who complied with the necessary academic requirements to complete a course.

Before this, Robredo also receive honorary doctorates from the following schools:

Earlier, a biology student also named a newly-discovered beetle species after Robredo's anti-poverty program Angat Buhay to honor its service during the pandemic.
