The city government of Manila early this week inaugurated the Basecommunity Housing, giving home to 229 indigent families who, until the project, did not have access to such standard of living in one of the country's most densely populated urban centers.
True to its name, these families come from Baseco compound, a barangay located in Manila's port area. When the community was ravaged by fire a few years ago, community organizers started lobbying the idea of free and quality housing to the city government.
On Monday during the inauguration, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso said the project whose construction started in December 2020 uplifts the dignity of the city's impoverished families.
"Ako ay naniniwala na ang pagtaas ng dignidad sa pagiging mahirap ay ang pagkakaroon ng sariling inyo, may sariling masisilungan kasama ang inyong mga anak," he said.
The Basecommunity has 229 two-story units of 42 square meters floor area.
