House Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda on Wednesday joined some of her former colleagues in the Senate in confirming their plan to run again for senator in the 2022 elections.
Legarda, who currently represents the lone district of Antique, said she decided to give the Senate another try as she wanted to ensure the effective implementation of the laws she pushed in the chamber.
"I served three terms, proud and inspired to say that most, if not all, of the environmental laws and the laws on women, children, I either authored or sponsored," she said in an ANC interview.
"I have to make sure that these, especially now in the time of pandemic recovery, are implemented efficiently and effectively and funded and that everyone understands," she added.
Legarda, who started out as a broadcast journalist, served as senator twice --- from 1998 to 2004 and again from 2007 to 2019.
Owing to her experience as a public servant for more than two decades now, she said she has more to offer not only to her home province of Antique but also to the entire country.
Legarda sees the need for a different approach for pandemic recovery, one that is also "attuned" to the economy and the issue of climate change, which is her advocacy in the House of Representatives.
"Sa aking pakikipanayam sa tao, ang aking alam, ang aking malawak na karanasan sa panunungkulan sa nasyonal at pati ngayon sa dalawang taon sa lokal ay higit na makakatulong sa pag-ahon natin," she said.
Legarda also previously sought the vice presidency twice --- in 2004 as the running mate of actor Fernando Poe Jr., and in 2010 as running mate of former Senate President Manny Villar.
