Malacanang is sending its condolences to the family former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Thursday.
Aquino passed away on Thursday morning, multiple reports said. The family has yet to release a statement.
"We commiserate po and condole with the family and loved ones of former president Benigno Simeon 'Noynoy' Aquino III as we extend our condolences on his untimely demise. We are grateful for the former president for his contribution and services to the country," Roque told reporters during the Palace press briefing. He also held a moment of silence to mourn Aquino's passing.
"We ask our people to offer a prayer for the eternal repose of the former chief executive. Rest in peace, Mr. President."
Aquino, the only son of democracy icon parents Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. and former President Cory Aquino, served as a president from 2010 to 2016. He was succeeded by incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte.
