Marcos Eyes Use of National ID by Early 2023, Seeks Faster Distribution

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Thursday said he was seeking to expedite the printing and distribution of the National ID cards so Filipinos may be able to use them by early next year.

Marcos said he met on Wednesday with the Socioeconomic Planning Sec. Arsenio Baliscan to discuss how the National ID can be delivered to Filipinos as soon as possible.

"Tinalakay kung paano mapapabilis ang pag-imprenta at distribusyon ng National ID cards upang magamit na ng ating mga kababayan simula sa unang bahagi ng taong 2023," Marcos said in a social media.

Malacañang on Thursday stressed the importance of the national ID for economic recovery.

"Necessary kasi yung national ID doon lalong-lalo na doon sa banking systems, sa pagtatayo ng maliliit na negosyo o kahit anong negosyo. Sa credit system mahalaga rin yung National ID System," said Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles in a press briefing.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Philippine Identification System Act in 2018 which creates a single identification card that would serve as a valid proof of identity for all Filipinos and residents registered.

In an executive order signed in February this year, Duterte also said the Philippine Identification System or PhilSys will serve as the government's central identification platform for all citizens and resident aliens of the country.

A person's record in the PhilSys will be deemed sufficient proof of identity and age in all public and private transactions. This means that individuals with a national ID should no longer be asked to present additional proof of identity, the executive order added.
