Religious gatherings such as masses are allowed at limited capacity in areas under modified enhanced community quarantine or MECQ, Malacañang said Monday, as new quarantine protocols took effect in the Philippine capital.

Religious gatherings can be held at up to 10% capacity of the venue and can be increased to 30% depending on the local government unit covering the area, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said.

"Pinapayagan na po ang religious gatherings sa MECQ hanggang 10% venue capacity pero ang LGU po pupwede increasan ito up to 30%  capacity," Roque said in a Palace press briefing.

Gatherings for wakes, and funerals are also allowed in areas under MECQ with attendance limited to immediate family members, he added.

Non-religious gatherings outside of residence remain prohibited in areas under MECQ.

Metro Manila, Laguna, Rizal, Cavite, and Bulacan were placed under MECQ, the second-highest in a four-step classification system after being under ECQ for two weeks until April 30.  Also placed under MECQ are Santiago City, Quirino, and Abra.
