Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto said Tuesday the giant cracks that appeared on Topaz Road in Ortigas Center were caused by a damaged drainage line that's roughly 70 years old and not by a fault line as feared by some.

The damaged line was part of the original drainage system built in the 1960s and was turned over to the LGU some time ago, Sotto said. Water seeped from the line, eroding the top soil on Topaz Road, he said.

"As per the Pasig engineering department's assessment, all buildings in the area are safe," Sotto said.

The drainage line has been plugged and diverted to prevent seepage. The mayor said the road and drainage would be repaired. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the damage to the drainage line.

They are also looking into possible violations at the adjacent excavation site which could have caused the problem. Sotto said the private developer would cooperate and help with needed repairs and rehabilitation.
